Federal Government Revamps Technical Colleges Curriculum, Introduces 26 Trade Areas.
The Nigerian Ministry of Education, led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, and the Minister of State for Education, Pro. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad has announced a major reform of the curriculum for Technical Education in Nigeria. This was made known by a public press release published by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Under this new structure, the ministry announced that all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) will now operate fully as Federal Technical Colleges starting from the 2025/2026 academic session. With each college offering a minimum of six and a maximum of ten trade courses.
To further streamline and modernize the curriculum to reflect industry needs and reduce workload for students, students will now take between nine and ten subjects, which include one trade course, five or six subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Citizenship & Heritage Studies, two or three trade-related subjects, and one elective.
Other trade areas include, Solar PV installation and maintenance, fashion design and garment marking, computer hardware and GSM repairs, livestock farming, beauty therapy and cosmetology, creative media, social media content creation and management, leather works, and other trades.
The Ministry added that this reform aims to focus on students learning relevant trades to serve industry needs, while strengthening Nigeria’s manufacturing, services, and digital economy.
The Minister of Education also noted that these reforms were necessary to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which targets driving Nigeria’s economy to one trillion dollars by 2030. Emphasizing that this new curriculum will better position students to compete in the global economy, ensuring they are gainfully employed and contributing meaningfully to the national development.
