Was your JAMB Score not what you expected? We understand, you are not alone. If you are currently cracking your brain on the best science course to study even with your disappointing JAMB score, we’ve got you. No score is too low to low to get you admission, except too low to tell someone.
Many candidates wait extra year just get that high score and play with the big boys in Medicine, Pharmacy and Engineering only to be disappointed again and again. Look, there are promising, highly employable and less competitive course that fly under the radar – Maritime Science. Wait a minute, Maritime Science? Yes, let’s throw more light on how it’s the chosen course in this article.
If you’re passionate about the sea, global trade, logistics, or environmental safety, this course might just be the golden ticket you’ve been searching for.
What is Maritime Science?
Maritime Science is the study of everything related to the sea, ships, marine ecosystems, and ocean-related industries. It combines elements of physical sciences, environmental studies, engineering, and logistics to prepare students for careers on and off the water. Perhaps you must have heard someone said “I’m a Farer”.
- A maritime scientist specializes on any of these maritime activities:
- Navigating ships and vessels
- Studying ocean currents, waves, and weather patterns
- Managing ports and shipping operations
- Ensuring safety and environmental protection at sea
- Exploring marine biodiversity and offshore energy resources
- Researching climate change effects on oceans
Whether you choose to explore the beauty of the Ocean on cargo ships, oil rigs, marine research labs, or port authorities, maritime science professionals are essential to a nation’s economic backbone.

Why Maritime Science is a Smart Choice (Even with a Low JAMB Score)
- Less Competition for Admission: Unlike courses like Medicine and Engineering, Maritime Science isn’t widely applied for, making it easier to get admission with JAMB scores as low as 150–180, depending on the institution.
- High Employability: Nigeria is a maritime nation with active ports in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, and Calabar. Maritime scientists are in high demand in:
Shipping and logistics companies
Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)
Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)
Oil & gas exploration firms
Marine environmental agencies
- Global Opportunities: With an internationally relevant degree, graduates can work abroad on ships, ports, or oil platforms. The marine industry is global, and so are its job prospects.
- Diverse Career Paths: You can become a marine surveyor, port operations manager, shipping analyst, maritime safety officer, marine biologist, or oceanographer.
Nigerian Institutions Offering Maritime Science or Related Courses
Several institutions in Nigeria offer Maritime Science or closely related programs under different titles such as Marine Science, Nautical Science, or Maritime Transport & Business Studies. Some top options include:
- Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (Akwa Ibom): Nigeria’s premier maritime institution: Offers courses in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Maritime Transport.
- Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa: Offers B.Sc. in Marine Science and related fields
- University of Lagos (UNILAG): Offers Marine Sciences (Zoology, Fisheries, and Oceanography)
- Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun: Offers Marine Engineering and related science courses.
- Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt: Offers Marine Engineering and Marine Environment Management
Admission Requirements for Maritime Science
Most institutions require:
- JAMB Subject Combination: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and one of Biology, Chemistry, or Geography (depending on the specialization).
- Minimum JAMB Score: 140–190 (depending on institution and program).
- O’Level Requirements: Five (5) credit passes including: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Geography.
- Post-UTME Screening: Some universities and academies conduct a screening or test. Preparing well can help you stand out even with a low JAMB score.
Why We Chose Maritime Science
In a country like Nigeria that boasts over 850km of coastline, busy ports, offshore oil drilling, and thriving water transportation the maritime sector is a goldmine of opportunities. Yet, it remains underexplored by many students.
- It’s a high-demand field with relatively low entry barriers.
- It gives students practical, real-world skills.
- It offers both national and international job prospects.
- It’s a course that combines passion for science with exciting work environments, from ships to coastal cities.
- With Nigeria’s push to become a hub for African maritime trade, professionals in this field are more needed than ever.
Conclusion
Your JAMB score doesn’t define your career, your choices, and the right information does. If you scored lower than expected, don’t sit back and wait another year. Consider Maritime Science a course that’s not just available, but valuable.
